Research in veterinary science is critical to the protection of public health and the advancement of science that benefits both human and animal as individuals and populations. In animals, health may be defined as the absence of disease or the normal functioning of an organism and normal behavior based on the observation of a certain number of individuals that determine the standard and thus health. Animal diseases definitely have an impact on trade at all levels. It can reduce the quantity and quality of animals and/or commodities that are available for sale by effects that range from catastrophic mortality to erosion of productivity. Live animals pose the greatest risk for transmission of infectious diseases, and this is where animal health management should be the first and foremost among the livestock producers. Research is undertaken in animal virology, microbiology, molecular biology, parasitology, pathology, and epidemiology for beef and dairy cattle, sheep, pig, poultry, honey bee, aquaculture and other animal industries.
The research provides the science to develop new recommendations to improve livestock production, enhance welfare and maintain market access for the state’s animal products. Many contributions of animal research were the results of society’s recognition of its important role and society’s subsequent support in the form of human, fiscal, and infrastructural resources. The current level of support for animal research, however, has not kept pace with the challenges posed by new and emerging threats and the nation’s growing demands for knowledge in bio medicine and animal health. That society’s needs are outgrowing our knowledge base is seen in examples of missed opportunities to safeguard and improve human and animal health and welfare.
The capacity of animal research depends on the availability of human and financial resources, research facilities, and infrastructure. Failure to provide the necessary resources could have devastating effects on both human and animal welfare, impede biomedical advances, and harm the economy and society as a whole. Hence the aim of the centre for animal science research and extension services concentrates on the production of disease free animals as well as to produce better pharmaceuticals for animal source to control the disease causing organisms.
