World Blood Donor Day June 14 2020
Birthday of Karl Landsteiner who discovered various blood groups and awarded Nobel Prize in the year 1930 is celebrated as World Blood Donor Day on 14th June every year. This day is celebrated to create awareness among people regarding the importance of blood donation for the society and saving some lives. This day thank voluntary blood donors as they donate the life saving gift the blood and also to raise awareness regarding the importance of regular blood donations to ensure that all individuals and communities have access to affordable and timely supplies of safe and quality-assured blood and blood products, as an integral part of universal health coverage and a key component of effective health systems. Every healthy individual can easily donate blood after the age of 18 years. The individual giving blood should not have diseases like HIV, Hepatitis B, and C etc. Along with that, there should also be adequate iron in the body previous to donating blood. Blood donation should be done once every 3 months as it keeps the amount of iron in your body right. The theme for this year’s World Blood Donor Day is “Safe blood saves lives” with the slogan “Give blood and make the world a healthier place”. Every year, a host country is chosen to celebrate the National Blood Donation Day. By donating blood, you are not only saving someone else’s life but also keeping your health right. There have been many pieces of research that have revealed that by donating blood, you remain physically and mentally healthy.
International organizations, including the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations and the International Society of Blood Transfusion, work in collaboration to provide guidance and support to their membership in this effort. Nowadays, only 60 countries are capable to afford blood supply through 100% voluntary donors, with 42 countries still depending on family and paid donors. Patients suffering from hemoglobinopathies mainly sickle cell disease, and hematologic malignancies depend on blood transfusion as part of their treatment, and these groups of patients consume a foremost part of blood supplies.
